Appeal for donations for Highway 101 turn lane at Discovery Bay RV Resort

On March 1, 2010, the Discovery Bay RV Resort suffered the tragic loss of our resident and Office Manager, Judy Cates, as she attempted to turn left off Hwy 101 into our entrance.  Our residents have been deeply affected by this loss as Judy touched many of us with her kindness, integrity, and sense of humor.  Many of you knew Judy too.

In April, we established the Hwy 101 Traffic Safety Citizens Committee to request that the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) take immediate steps to improve traffic safety on Hwy 101 throughout Gardiner. The committee sought input from citizens and developed a proposal listing potential solutions.  On July 7, we participated in a meeting with our legislators, Jefferson County Commissioners, Highway Patrol officers, and WSDOT officials.  Two positive outcomes were achieved:

First, WSDOT has reviewed and approved our signage proposal.  “Left turns ahead” signs have been ordered and will be installed in early September at our park, Wild Birds Unlimited, Old Gardiner Rd., and Gardiner Beach Rd.  This benefits the entire Gardiner community.

Second, WSDOT agreed with our legislators and commissioners that construction of a center left turn lane into our entrance is the best option as left turn lanes are proven to significantly decrease accidents.  The state has given us a $30,000 estimate–our cost since state dollars cannot be used to construct turn lanes for private driveways or entrances. If our Board of Directors can guarantee funding by mid October, WSDOT will put the project on their design calendar this winter and schedule construction in early spring 2011.

All of us continue to risk our lives making that very dangerous turn into our park.  We can’t change what happened to Judy, but we CAN make certain a left turn accident doesn’t happen again.  We have already raised $18,500 toward our goal of $30,000.  Will you help us with a small donation to realize this important goal?

Donations should be made to DBLA and designated “Highway 101."  Our mailing address is 2261 Old Gardiner Rd., Sequim, WA 98382. While we are a Washington State Non-profit Leaseholders Association, our federal status does not allow tax deductible donations.

Thank you,

Lynn E. Kauffman, Board President

Discovery Bay Leaseholders Association

Gardiner Community
by Pat Nebel 'Old Timer'

Don’t blink or you might miss the community of Gardiner, on highway 101, about halfway between Port Townsend and Sequim.  The only indication of the community is the private campground, the Wild Birds Unlimited store and the Espresso Garden latte stand, the community center and Gardiner Community Church.

Gardiner is in Jefferson County, Washington, listed in the Quilcene phone book, is in the Sequim School District and has a Sequim Zip Code.

Many homes are built along the water to enjoy a view across the mouth of Discovery Bay with Diamond Point on the west, Beckett Point on the east and Protection Island bordering the shipping lanes on the Straight of Juan de Fuca.  Beyond, the San Juan Islands are silhouetted  against the skyline.

The old school house was purchased by Jefferson County and became the Gardiner Community center.  The building has been the center  for many local activities  like the Garden Club, Rhododendron  Grange, North Olympic Council square dancing, exercise programs, potluck dinners, birthday parties and Christmas programs.  Friends and neighbors meet for a 4th of July picnic and get together at the boat ramp over the 3 day President’s Day weekend to help with the Discovery Bay Salmon Derby.

We still see many small birds, bald eagles and blue herons, Canadian geese, crows, hummingbirds, robins and even a turkey buzzard or two.  There are cattle  and horses in the fields and until lately a small herd of buffalo.  You might even see a coyote out in the middle of the day.

Some things have disappeared like the Gardiner Store and gas station and Post Office; Lobo Land and the howling of wolves at sundown;  the train that went thru from Port Townsend to Port Angeles and it’s whistle in the middle of the night;  people earning their living by cutting and hauling pulpwood or picking brush or digging clams and going fishing for cod fish and actually coming home with some for dinner.

Gardiner, for all it’s differences, it is still a nice place to live.
